Job Description

As assigned, operates a variety of regular-drive solid waste vehicles, to include Rear Loader Garbage Truck, Clam Truck, and Roll-Off Truck in order to collect and dispose of residential solid waste and recycling materials. Transports materials to designated transfer station or disposal facility. Complies with all safety guidelines including inspection of equipment, use of personal protective equipment, following safe practices, and reporting safety issues to the appropriate supervisor(s). Assists other employees, departments, and interact with residents.

 

Essential Functions

Operate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment:

Operate assigned vehicle through residential and high traffic areas.

When operating Clam Truck, utilize and control a main boom/crane, telescopic extension, grapple bucket with mechanical levers in performs of duties.

When operating a Roll-Off vehicle deliver empty roll-off containers to proper locations and pickup full roll-off containers for proper disposal utilizing hydraulic control levers and hooking and unhooking winch cable serval times throughout the day.

 

Perform & Comply with Safety Measures:

Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log.

Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet Division.

Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement.

 

Job Requirements

Experience: Experience operating solid waste collection vehicles is preferred.

Driver’s License Required: Must have a Class A or Class B South Carolina CDL.

Certifications and Other Requirements: DOT Medical Card is required.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Two-way radio, maps, navigation system aids. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software and hardware. Route optimization aids (Navigation Hardware).

 

Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Outdoors (residential collections).

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, hard hat, gloves (optional), safety vest, and safety glasses.

 

Physical Demands

Continuously requires fine dexterity, sitting, reaching, vision, foot controls, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires walking, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, and bending. Occasionally requires standing, lifting, carrying, and crouching. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.
